Mets waste gem by Pelfrey
Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals
The New York Mets wasted an absolutely brilliant performance last
night by Mike Pelfrey. The young righty pitched six innings of no hit
ball and allowed only one run into the eight inning. He was awesome!
sadly,on the 2008 New York Mets, often times that still is not
enough. I feel bad for Pelfrey.
The Mets dropped three out of four at home to the lowly
Washington Nationals. Inexcusable! They could not muster even a
single run last night to support Pelfrey. Yes, I understand, Nationals
starter Jason Bergmann was brilliant himself, credit to him. But
still, a Championship caliber team, as the Mets consider
themselves, find a way to win.
The 2008 New York Mets find a way to lose. Case in point; bottom
of the eight, Mets trailing 1-0, Jose Reyes on first, nobody out.
Luis Castillo sacrifices, Reyes gets thrown out attempting to
advance all the way to third base. Now we have two outs and none on.
Don’t get me wrong, I admire Reyes’s hustle and aggressive attitude, I
really do. But sometimes you have to use your brain. That was a dumb
play!
It was indicative of the way things have gone for the Mets all season, they find ways to lose. That is what .500 teams do.
Mets lose to Nationals, 5-3

The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals, 5-3
tonight at Shea Stadium. It really wasn’t the Mets fault….they won
yesterday, they were just due to lose today.
If the Mets have any chance at doing something meaningful this
season, like say, winning the NL East, they simply MUST break out of
this win one, lose one trend they are riding. Further, to win the
division, you MUST beat up on the weak teams…like the Nationals. I
can deal with splitting against the Phillies, or some of the other
better teams in the League. Quality teams, in any sport, feast on the
weaker teams….you have to.
The New York Mets debut of Claudio Vargas was spoiled. Vargas did a
great job for his first ever MLB start, two runs through six and a
third. Then along came Aaron Heilman…..four runs later, Vargas’s
performance was waisted. Is it just me or is it time to realize that
Heilman is a liability?? Don’t get me wrong, I know the man has done
some nice things for the Mets in the past. But this year I am almost
resigned to switching the channel over to American Idol when he comes
in…..maybe not, I actually hate that show, but you get the idea.
Mets to open four game set vs Nationals
Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals
The New York Mets open up a four game set (weather permitting)
tonight at Shea Stadium vs the Washington Nationals. The starting
pitchers are scheduled to be Odealis Perez for the Nationals vs Nelson
Figueroa for the Mets.
The Nationals enter the ball game with a record of 15-23, 8.5 games
back while the New York Mets come in at 19-16, 3 back of the surprising
Florida Marlins, and in a statistical tie with the Philadelphia cheese
steaks…I mean Phillies.
The Mets look to gain some momentum after taking two of three
against the Reds this weekend…by the way Dusty Baker, check your
batting order closely next time.
New York Mets quick hits for 5/12, 5/13, 5/14 and 5/15:
- there are 64 games left at Shea Stadium
- on 5/12/72, Willie Mays made his New York Mets debut
- the Mets rank 5th in the NL with a team ERA of 3.84
- 5/13 starting pitchers: John Maine vs John Lannon
- 5/14 starting pitchers: Mets, TBA vs Tim Redding
- 5/15 starting pitchers: Johan Santana vs TBA
Mets blow 3-0 lead, lose to Nationals

The
New York Mets lost to the Washington Nationals last night 10-5. Mets
starter Oliver Perez had an early 3-0 lead, but as these Mets have
shown us too many times of late, no lead is safe with them.
As I stated in my most recent post, the Mets MUST beat up on these
weaker teams in the NL. Especially when you start out with a lead. But
in a familiar story, poor bull pen work and lack of clutch hitting cost
the Mets again.
These early season losses to weaker teams might not seem significant
right now, but just wait until September when in all probability we
will be locked in a tight race with the Phillies and Braves.
Speaking of the Braves, they are up next. Check back later today for pre game analysis.

Santana stilfles Nationals, 7-2

The
New York Mets topped the Washington Nationals 7-2 last night in our
Nations Capitol. The Mets were led by pitching ace Johan Santana who
went, as usual, seven strong innings. Johan was also one of the Mets
better hitters smacking a pair of doubles.
If only Johan Santana could give hitting lessons to Pedro Serrano…I mean Carlos Delgado.
By the way,Mets manager Willie Randolph dropped Serrano to the six spot last night.
The teams hook up again tonight at 7:10. Oliver Perez goes for the Mets, while Shawn Hill throws em for the Nationals.
Great night for the New York Mets!

The
New York Mets ripped the Washington Nationals 6-0 last night at Shea
Stadium. The game featured many positive signs for the Mets.
First, Mike Pelfrey once again impressed, the tall right hander
went seven shut out innings. Pelfrey had a lot of zip on his fastball
and he did a great job with his location as he seemed to be on the edge
of the plate all night. If Mike Pelfrey can continue to pitch this way,
that would be huge for the Mets.
Second David Wright continues his strong start. Wright had a five RBI night which included a two run blast in the first.
Third, Jose Reyes returned from his brief absence to rest a sore
hamstring. Reyes had three hits including a triple…the legs didn’t
seem to bother him at all.
Last, and maybe most significant, Duaner Sanchez made his Mets
return. After missing well over a year while recovering from a non
baseball accident Sanchez came on in the ninth to shut down the
Nationals and seal the victory for the Mets.
The teams go at it again tonight at 7:05. John Maine gets the start for the Mets.
Mets up 2-0 thru 3 innings

The
New York Mets lead the Washington Nationals 2-0 thru three innings.
Mets starter Mike Pelfrey has been gutsy, while allowing four hits, a
walk and a hit batter, he has refused to allow the Nationals to
score a run. Pelfrey pitched out of a bases loaded jam in
the third capped off by blowing away Nick Johnson with a 94 mph
fastball.
Keep it up Mike.
The offense for the Mets came from a two run homer by David Wright in the first inning.
Mike Pelfrey gets second start tonight against Nationals
Remember to check out our homepage myteamrivals
Mets right hander Mike Pelfrey (1-0) makes his second start of
the young season tonight at Shea (7:10pm). He will be opposed by
Odealis Perez for the Washington Nationals.
Pelfrey was impressive in his first start when the Mets beat the
Phillies last week. He will need to be as impressive tonight as the
Mets need to start to establish themselves as the team to beat in the
NL East…just ask Carlos Beltran. It won’t be easy as the Nationals
are a very under rated team that will give fits to the division all
season.
Also, I really don’t want to see Lastings Miledge happy at Shea
Stadium this week. You just know he wants to stick it to the
Mets…don’t let it happen Pelfrey!!
Quick Hits:
- the mets come into tonight’s game at 5-6, 1.5 out of first
- the nationals are 4-9, 3.5 back
- on April, 15 1972, Ed Kranepool popped a two run homer as the Mets beat the Pittsburg Pirates 4-0
- that game was the very first as Mets manager for Yogi Berra
- every Met player will wear #42 tonight in honor of Jackie Robinson
