Santana loses in Shea debut

Remember to check out our homepage: myteamrivals

The
New York Mets lost this afternoon 5-3 to the Milwakee Brewers. This was
Johan Santana’s Shea Stadium debut and sadly it didn’t go as expected.
While Johan was not bad, he was not great either.

Two errors by David Wright and an error in judgment by Santana
didn’t help. In the second inning with  Brewer Corey Hart (by the
way…wasn’t he a rock star in the eighties??) on third, a sacrifice
bunt was fielded by the Mets new ace and he didn’t bother to look at
Hart who scored easily on the play.

The bright spot for the Mets is the continued good hitting of Carlos
Delgado..(by the way, doesn’t he like like Serrano from the movie major
league??).

The teams hook up again tomorrow as Oliver Perez goes for the Mets against Jeff Suppan for the beer makers.

Rumor is, Serrano lent this to Delgado for good luck….we don’t make it up folks, we just report it:

Figueroa impresses in Mets debut!

Coney Island native Nelson Figueroa was very impressive in his New
York Mets debut.  He had a  no  hitter  through  five  innings  and
ended  up with  a  solid  six  inning  performance  yielding  just
two  runs  on  two  hits.

It was a very emotional evening for Figueroa as  he  had  over  100
friends and  family  in  attendance.  “I thought I was going to lose
it,” he said. “I really did. It was just
the culmination of everything — the intensity of the game. This
journey has been so incredible, and to go out there and put forth that
kind of a performance … it’s storybook-like.”

He got the win as the Mets topped  the  Milwakee  Brewers  4-2.
Billy  Wagner  pitched  a  1-2-3  ninth  to notch  the  save….the
bull pen  has  been  lights  out  the  past  two  games,  lets  hope
it  continues.

The Mets and Brewers go at it again today at 1:05 in a marquee
pitching match up; Ben Sheets goes for Milwakee and Johan Santana makes
his long awaited Shea Stadium debut. There will be plenty of excitement
today.

Quick hits:

  • the first 25,000 fans will receive a city field cap today
  • Duaner  Sanchez  may join the Mets as early as Tuesday
  • Carlos Beltran had seven doubles in the Mets first six games

Inept bullpen, lack of hitting, Phils drop Mets in Opener

The New York Mets were beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies in the
final season opener at Shea Stadium. The theme was the same as it has
been  early  in  the  Mets  2008  season;  effective  outing  by  the
starting  pitcher,  bullpen  comes  in and  gets  abused  by  the
opposition,  and  the  Mets  can’t  do  anything  on  offense!

Starter Oliver  Perez was wild but effective, he went five and two
thirds scoreless innings. Not bad. Then came the bullpen; Scott
Schoenweiss, Jorge Sosa and Aaaron Heilman teamed up to allow five runs
over two innings. This is becoming a very bad trend so far.

The offense, despite a monster home run by Carlos Delgado, was
basically limp…although, in fairness, they did hit several balls deep
to Center that failed to carry thus turning possible home runs into
outs.

As  I  have  stated  in  previous  posts,  it is  a  long  season
(and  just look at the Super Bowl Champion New Giants to know you can’t
count a talented team out early), but still, on the heels of last years
collapse I expected a bit more fire out of the Mets.

The Mets try  to get  it back on  track  Wednesday  night as Mike Pelfrey takes the mound.

Quick Hits:

  • The New York Mets are now 30-17 in home openers
  • this  includes  11-3  since  1995
  • the   Mets  are 7-1  in  openers vs  the  Philadelphia  Phillies
  • today  was  Oliver  Perez’s  second  start  in  a  season  opener

Turnpike series to resume tomorrow!

After a long off season for New York Met fans, we finally get a
crack at the  team we  gave  a  gift  to  last  season…the
Philadelphia  Phillies.  Christmas  won’t  come  early  again  this
year  Philly  fans.  The  New  York  Mets  will set out on Tuesday
afternoon to make things right!

I am well aware, painfully well aware, that the Mets blew a 7 game
lead with  only 17  left  to  play  in  the  2007  regular  season.

I am also well aware that the Philadelphia Phillies played very well down the stretch run  last  September .

However,  write  it  down,  starting  tomorrow,  April  8th, 2008,
the  New  York  Mets  will  defeat  the  Philadelphia  Phillies. This
will mark the beginning of Willie Randolph and his players paying back
the Shea Stadium faithful for the nightmare that was last season.

I for one cannot wait to resume the Turnpike series….lets go Mets!

(The starting pitchers will be Oliver Perez vs some very old dude for Philly).

Johan Santana’s effort not enough for Mets in loss

Remember to check out our homepage at:  www.myteamrivals.com

Today’s game between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves put front
and center the big challenge New York faces this season…how to score
runs. Johan Santana was not the reason for the 3-1 loss. Seven innings
and one run allowed means you did your job. When the bull pen gives up
two runs in two innings and the offense can only muster one pathetic
run over nine innings (despite a double by the pitcher!), your team let
you down.

It was however a great pitching match up between John Smoltz and
Johan Santana. John Smoltz threw five shut out innings. The classic
pitchers duel provided little consolation though as the loss dropped
the Mets to 2-3 on the season. I don’t want to make too much out of
only five games, but we all  remember how  last season ended.  We
heard reports  from  Florida  about  renewed  focus, attention  to
detail  and  a  strong   desire  by  Mets  players to make up for last
years monumental collapse….so far, not looking like much has changed.
I sincerely hope I am making too much of this…I just expected more
early on.

Anyhow, on a brighter note the home opener is upon us! On Tuesday,
April 8th…yes folks this Tuesday, the Mets play their final opener at
Shea Stadium. The Philadelphia Phillies…also losers today (sorry had
to say it)…come to pay a visit. The starters will be Jamie Moyer for
Philly against the Mets Oliver Perez.

Lets go Mets!

John Maine struggling through three

Through three innings John Maine doesn’t appear to have his  best
stuff, to put it mildly. He is already up over sixty pitches and has
given up three runs on six hits while struggling with his control. The
New York Mets trail the hated Atlanta Braves 3-1. The only positive is
his velocity as he hit the mid nineties numerous times on his
fastball.

Lets get it together Johnny.
