The New York Mets (8-6) and rival Philadelphia Phillies (8-8) will
square off in a much anticipated battle tonight at Citizens Bank Park
at 7:05pm. Cole Hamels (2-1 0.82) will oppose off season acquisition
Johan Santana (1-2 3.05).
The Mets won a dramatic game in the 14th inning last night against the
Washington Nationals on a wild pitch. They look to come into
Philadelphia and take at least 2 out of 3 against the hated
Philadelphia Phillies.

- The Mets are 19-18 at Citizens Bank Park.
- Carlos Delgado is a career .320 hitter against the Phillies with 16 homeruns.

Mets, Pelfrey FINALLY snap skid!!

The
New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-2 last night at Shea
Stadium. The victory snapped a nine game losing streak to the Phils.
Mike Pelfrey was effective going five innings and yielding just two runs against the potent Philly line up.
The Mets hitters showed ample patience drawing six walks against
starter Kyle Kendrick. The Phillies also were in a generous mood
with four errors and a wild pitch. That certainly was a factor, but
after nine losses to the team from down the Turnpike..I’ll tale it!
The teams go at it again tonight at 7:05….John Maine goes for the Mets against Mark Eaton.
Can Mike Pelfrey end the skid??

Tonight at Shea Stadium, Mike Pelfrey takes the mound for the New
York Mets going against Kyle Kendrick who will be making the start for
the Philadelphia Phillies. As the Mets have now lost nine straight to
the Phils, and Mike Pelfrey hasn’t exactly lived up to his billing as
of yet, the question is can we FINALLY beat the Phils?
He is certainly a talented pitcher and there is a reason the Mets
used a first round pick on him in 2005. But he was unimpressive last
season and flat out brutal for much of the spring. While he has shown
flashes of his real potential, we just haven’t seen any consistency out
of him. The Philadelphia Phillies, with a vaunted line up that included
Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and others is no easy task.
But Pelfrey sounds up for it…”It’s my first start of the season so the adrenaline is definitely
going to be there, and the excitement is definitely going to be there,”
Pelfrey said. “Really, I just want to get the season going — to be a
part of it and help contribute.”
Lets hope we look back on tonight’s contest as a turning point not
only for Mike Pelfrey, but also for our New York Mets!
Quick Hits:
- Mike Pelfrey was 3-8 with a 5.57 era in 2007
- his spring era was 8.14
- Duanar Sanchez threw 2 shut out innings last night for St. Lucie
- on this date in 1985, Gary Carter made his Mets debut,
Carter ended the game against the St Louis Cardinals with a walk off
10th inning home run
A couple of questions about Willie…
Remember to check out our homepage at: www.myteamrivals.com
Let me be clear; I like Willie Randolph. I think he has done a nice
job as manager of the New York Mets. He is a nice, affable guy, the
players seem to like him and he knows Baseball. Furthermore, he seems
to have the kind of “even” disposition that serves him and his
players well during a 162 game season (especially in New York
where idiots like me question every move).
That said, I have been left scratching my head too many times over
the last couple of seasons. It happened again a couple of times in
today’s final Shea Stadium opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
First, Starter Oliver Perez wasn’t great, but he was effective. He
threw five and two third scoreless innings against a Phillies line up
that is loaded. It is also a line up that recently has feasted off the
Mets bull pen. With two out in the top of the sixth, Perez issued two
walks…between those a balk and a pass ball gave Philly runners on
first and third….again with two out. With New York leading 2-0 at
the time, Willie Randolph decided to go to the bull pen. I am well
aware that Oliver Perez has at times in the past shown an ability to
completely melt down. I am also aware that our bull pen is shaky to put
it mildly. I think Oliver Perez showed enough to warrant giving him the
chance to pitch out of this jam he got himself into. If Willie left him
in the game would we have won?? Who knows. What I do know is that after
he left the game, Philly scored five runs.
Second, in the bottom of the seventh, Mets trailing 3-2, runner on
first, no outs, up came Endy Chavez. Here is an excellent
bunter…with Jose Reyes on deck…I thought it was an obvious
call…lay one down, Reyes comes up with a chance to drive in the
tying run with a single. Instead Endy Chavez grounds into a
double play, Mets are basically out of the inning.
I don’t know..just a couple of questions about Willie…
Inept bullpen, lack of hitting, Phils drop Mets in Opener
Remember to check out our homepage at: www.myteamrivals.com
The New York Mets were beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies in the
final season opener at Shea Stadium. The theme was the same as it has
been early in the Mets 2008 season; effective outing by the
starting pitcher, bullpen comes in and gets abused by the
opposition, and the Mets can’t do anything on offense!
Starter Oliver Perez was wild but effective, he went five and two
thirds scoreless innings. Not bad. Then came the bullpen; Scott
Schoenweiss, Jorge Sosa and Aaaron Heilman teamed up to allow five runs
over two innings. This is becoming a very bad trend so far.
The offense, despite a monster home run by Carlos Delgado, was
basically limp…although, in fairness, they did hit several balls deep
to Center that failed to carry thus turning possible home runs into
outs.
As I have stated in previous posts, it is a long season
(and just look at the Super Bowl Champion New Giants to know you can’t
count a talented team out early), but still, on the heels of last years
collapse I expected a bit more fire out of the Mets.
The Mets try to get it back on track Wednesday night as Mike Pelfrey takes the mound.
Quick Hits:
- The New York Mets are now 30-17 in home openers
- this includes 11-3 since 1995
- the Mets are 7-1 in openers vs the Philadelphia Phillies
- today was Oliver Perez’s second start in a season opener
