Mets lose again to beer makers

“It was a sloppy game” said Mets manager Willie Randolph. We agree.
The  New York Mets dropped a 9-7 decision this afternoon to the
Milwakee Brewers at Shea Stadium.

After a rough start in the first inning in which Oliver Perez
surrendered a two run homer, things started turning for the Mets who
opened up a 6-2 lead in the third.  However, they quickly gave it all
right back…and then some. The  bull pen reverted to it’s  shaky 
form, as  did the  offense…5  double  plays  in the final  five 
innings! 

Forgive me if I am still not over last September’s  monstrous 
collapse,  but  I see  far  too  many  signs  from  the  ’08  Mets
that  remind  me  of  the  ’07  team…at least the September version
of the team.

If you want to be a Championship contender, as the Mets claim to be, you DO NOT lose games like this!

Yes, I know it’s early…but again, I see cause for concern.   The Nationals are up next…lets  hope  we get  it in gear.

In the mean while, perhaps Willie, Omar and the Mets might try some of this:

The New York Mets are ahead of the Milwakee Brewers 6-2 after three.
Oliver Perez had a shaky start yielding a two run blast in the first
but seems to have settled down a bit.

Brian Schneider had a bases loaded two run single in the third.

David Wright hit a big milestone today when he cranked out his 100th
career Home Run. Congratulations David. If he keeps up this pace Daryl
Strawberry’s team record of 282 is easily within reach.

Santana loses in Shea debut

The
New York Mets lost this afternoon 5-3 to the Milwakee Brewers. This was
Johan Santana’s Shea Stadium debut and sadly it didn’t go as expected.
While Johan was not bad, he was not great either.

Two errors by David Wright and an error in judgment by Santana
didn’t help. In the second inning with  Brewer Corey Hart (by the
way…wasn’t he a rock star in the eighties??) on third, a sacrifice
bunt was fielded by the Mets new ace and he didn’t bother to look at
Hart who scored easily on the play.

The bright spot for the Mets is the continued good hitting of Carlos
Delgado..(by the way, doesn’t he like like Serrano from the movie major
league??).

The teams hook up again tomorrow as Oliver Perez goes for the Mets against Jeff Suppan for the beer makers.

Rumor is, Serrano lent this to Delgado for good luck….we don’t make it up folks, we just report it:

Figueroa impresses in Mets debut!

Coney Island native Nelson Figueroa was very impressive in his New
York Mets debut.  He had a  no  hitter  through  five  innings  and 
ended  up with  a  solid  six  inning  performance  yielding  just 
two  runs  on  two  hits.

It was a very emotional evening for Figueroa as  he  had  over  100 
friends and  family  in  attendance.  “I thought I was going to lose
it,” he said. “I really did. It was just
the culmination of everything — the intensity of the game. This
journey has been so incredible, and to go out there and put forth that
kind of a performance … it’s storybook-like.”

He got the win as the Mets topped  the  Milwakee  Brewers  4-2. 
Billy  Wagner  pitched  a  1-2-3  ninth  to notch  the  save….the 
bull pen  has  been  lights  out  the  past  two  games,  lets  hope 
it  continues.

The Mets and Brewers go at it again today at 1:05 in a marquee
pitching match up; Ben Sheets goes for Milwakee and Johan Santana makes
his long awaited Shea Stadium debut. There will be plenty of excitement
today.

Quick hits:

  • the first 25,000 fans will receive a city field cap today
  • Duaner  Sanchez  may join the Mets as early as Tuesday
  • Carlos Beltran had seven doubles in the Mets first six games

Figueroa to make Mets debut vs Brewers

Nelson
Figueroa makes his first start as a New York Mets pitcher  tonight. He 
will  be  opposed  by lefty Manny Parra for the Milwakee Brewers.

After last night’s rousing 4-3 win by the Mets over the rival
Phillies in twelve innings, hopefully this is the  start  of 
something  good  for  New  York.

As has been often discussed on this site (and else where), the Mets
desperately need some early success after last season’s finish.
