Mets take 2 of 3 from Giants!
The New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-3 to take the
series. Mets starter John Maine went six innings giving up one run on
seven hits. Maine is now 6-4.
Jose Reyes had a big night with a homer, a single and a double. Carlos Beltran also had two RBI’s.
I know the Giants aren’t exactly the second coming of the ’27
Yankees, or if you like, the ’86 Mets, but still, the Mets won two out
of three on the road. Over the course of the season, that is all you
need to do; just win a lot of series. With the return of Pedro
Martinez, the Mets now seem to have a solid top three in the starting
rotation. I still have a lot of concerns about the Mets, but, I finally
have some reason for optimism in this bizarre season.
Up next, the San Diego Padres.

Mets open up series in San Francisco
The New York Mets open up a three game series against the San
Francisco Giants on the west coast tonight at 10:15pm. The Mets are on
their best stretch of the season having won five of their last six
games. Tonight poses an interesting challenge for the Amazins as they
played a night game at Shea on Sunday, then had to board a plane
for a cross country trip and play tonight. The Mets must have pissed
off someone in the MLB scheduling office.
The Mets enter the contest at 28-27, 3.5 back, while the Giants are
24-33, 8.0 back. This series gives the Mets a chance against a weak
team to string together some wins…lets hope they take advantage.
The starting pitchers are Oliver Perez(4-3) vs Jonathon Sanchez (3-3).
New York Mets quick hits for 6/2, 6/3 and 6/4:
- Johan Santana got his 100th career win last night…congrats!
- Jose Reyes has reached base safely in 32 straight games
- Carlos Beltran has reached base in 35 straight starts
- David Wright is the ONLY MLB player to play every inning this season….look out Cal Ripken!
- 6/3 starting pitchers are Pedro Martinez vs Barry Zito
- 6/4 starting pitchers are John Maine vs Matt Cain
Mets take 3 of 4 from the Dodgers!
The New York Mets beat the Dodgers 6-1 tonight at Shea Stadium. The
win makes the Amazins 5-1 in their last six games and finally
appear to be getting on a roll.
So many key Mets came through tonight; David Wright with 2 RBI’s and
a run scored, Carlos Beltran with a two run homer, Ryan Church also had
a two run job, Jose Reyes had three hits and Johan Santana was
outstanding. Santana went seven and two thirds allowing just one run.
It was Johan’s seventh win of the season and the Mets are 9-3 in games
he started. Not bad numbers for a team just one win above .500.
Mets fans have reason for optimism as the team travels across
country to face the San Francisco Giants Monday night..(I won’t
complain right now about the MLB scheduling screw up). Remember, Pedro
Martinez makes his return to the Mets line up Tuesday night.
I have been waiting all season for the Mets to make a run, it seems
to be happening right now. While I still feel the club has some holes,
I also feel with some breaks they could be a team to contend with.

Mets lead 6-1 after three!
The New York Mets lead the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 after three
innings. David Wright has two RBI’s and scored on a monster two run
homer by Carlos Beltran. Beltran seems to be coming around which is
huge news for the Mets as he can carry the club when hot. Ryan Church,
in his first game back after a concussion, also launched a two run shot
over the right field fence. All five Mets runs in the third inning came
with two men out.
In other positive news, Jose Reyes is two for two, and starter Johan Santana, as usual, keeps the Mets in the game.
Also, I am smoking an *** kicking cigar…maybe that one is only important to me, but still…
Mets come from behind, win 3-2!
The New York Mets had a dramatic, come from behind victory today at Shea Stadium.

The Mets were trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0 in the bottom of
the eight inning when Carlos Betlran delivered a clutch two run homer
to tie the game. The go ahead run was provided by Fernando Tatis with
a big single. This is the second game winning hit this week for Tatis
who seems determined to once again be considered a viable major league
player.
Mike Pelfrey had a solid outing but may be headed for either the
minors or the bull pen when Pedro Martinez gets back into the rotation
Tuesday. Personally, I would rather take my chances with Pelfrey and
make a move with the inconsistent Oliver Perez…but, I don’t get a
vote.
The Mets have now won four out of five..pretty good numbers for this season.

Met winning streak over at three
The New York Mets lost last night to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium, 9-5. The loss ends the Mets winning streak at three games.

Much maligned Mets reliever Aaron Heilman (who looks a bit like Michael
J Fox..) was the goat. After a tremendous week that featured him
pitching four scoreless innings, manager Willie Randolph decided to
trust him to nurse a one run lead in the eight.
The result was disaster for the Mets as Heilman, aided by a blown call at first base, gave up four hits in a five run inning.
Heilman left the mound to a chorus of boos from Mets fans. I am
hopeful that the great week we saw out of the Mets pen was no tease and
that last night’s performance was just one bad outing, but time will
tell. The Mets, like any team, obviously can’t go very far without
a reliable bull pen.
In other news, Luis Castillo left the game
with a strained hip flexor…good news for some Mets fans I am sure.
The extent of the injury is not clear.
Keep it in perspective Mets fans, we have won three out of four. It
is critical though for the team to respond with a solid win today.

Mets beat Dodgers, 8-4!
The New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 tonight at Shea
Stadium. The win was the Mets third straight and clearly establishes
the Mets as baseballs premier team…(ok, just kidding).
Seriously though, it is nice to finally string together a few W’s
and start to feel something positive around this Mets team. The tone
lately has been pretty negative, and deservedly so as I think even most
Mets players would admit.

Since David Wright cracked a pair of home runs tonight, I figured I
would once again break out this picture. (As I have been told, it is
appreciated by men and women alike). If David gets back in stride, it
is a huge boost to the Mets offense as I feel he has the ability to
carry this team.
Another positive sign for the Mets was the continued effectiveness
of the bullpen. After last night’s stellar performance by the pen,
tonight the much maligned Scott Schoenweiss came on to pitch a
perfect one and two thirds innings.
Lets not forget either that Mets starter Claudio Vargas got it done.
He pitched to the minimum twelve hitters through four innings before
needing a bit of help from the pen,but he kept the Mets in the game.
Lets hope the Mets continue this recent trend!
Mets open 4 game stand vs Dodgers
The New York Mets open up a four game series tonight at Shea Stadium
against the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch is set for 7:10pm. Claudio
Vargas (1-2) starts for the Mets and Brad Penny (5-5) goes for the
Dodgers.
The Mets hope to gain some momentum from last night’s thrilling 7-6
victory over the Marlins. The Mets took 2 of 3 against the first place
Marlins, after losing six of the previous seven games. With all the
controversy surrounding the club of late, this would certainly be an
opportune time for the Mets to get on a roll.
In a scheduling glitch, or worse, the Mets host the Dodgers on
ESPN’s Sunday night baseball, then fly across country to play in San
Francisco on Monday night. Think about it…the game will end around
11:30 EST, the Mets then have to deal with their post game
responsibilities, probably catch a 2:00am flight, fly five hours to
Frisco, then play a game! That stinks!
New York Mets quick hits:
- starting pitchers for 5/30; John Maine vs Clayton Kershaw
- starting pitchers for 5/31; Mike Pelfrey vs Chad Billingsley
- starting pitchers for 6/1; Johan Santana vs Hiroki Kurada
- the Mets may look to aquire first baseman Scott Hattenberg if he clears waivers from the Reds
- the Dodgers enter the series at 26-26, 3.5 back
- the Mets are 25-26, 4.5 back
- this date in Mets history; 5/29/86, Sid Fernandez beat Fernando Valenzuela 5-2
