Mets come from behind, win 3-2!

The New York Mets had a dramatic, come from behind victory today at Shea Stadium.

Carlos_beltran The Mets were trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0 in the bottom of the eight inning when Carlos Betlran delivered a  clutch two run homer to tie the game.  The go ahead run was provided by Fernando Tatis with a big single. This is the second game winning hit this week for Tatis who seems determined to once again be considered a viable major league player.

Mike Pelfrey had a solid outing but may be headed for either the minors or the bull pen when Pedro Martinez gets back into the rotation Tuesday. Personally, I would rather take my chances with Pelfrey and make a move with the inconsistent Oliver Perez...but, I don't get a vote.

The Mets have now won four  out of five..pretty good numbers for this season.

Met winning streak over at three

The New York Mets lost last night to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium, 9-5. The loss ends the Mets winning streak at three games.

Heilman Much maligned Mets reliever Aaron Heilman (who looks a bit like Michael J Fox..) was the goat. After a tremendous week that featured him pitching four scoreless innings, manager Willie Randolph decided to trust him to nurse a one run lead in the eight.
The result was disaster for the Mets as Heilman, aided by a blown call at first base, gave up four hits in a five run inning.

Heilman left the mound to a chorus of boos from Mets fans. I am hopeful that the great week we saw out of the Mets pen was no tease and that last night's performance was just one bad outing,  but time will tell. The Mets, like any team, obviously can't  go  very   far  without a  reliable  bull pen.
In other news, Luis Castillo left the game with a strained hip flexor...good news for some Mets fans I am sure. The extent of the injury is not clear.

Keep it in perspective Mets fans, we have won three out of four. It is critical though for the team to respond with a solid win today.

Mets beat Dodgers, 8-4!

The New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 tonight at Shea Stadium. The win was the Mets third straight and clearly establishes the Mets as baseballs premier team...(ok, just kidding).

Seriously though, it is nice to finally string together a few W's and start to feel something positive around this Mets team. The tone lately has been pretty negative, and deservedly so as I think even most Mets players would admit.

David_wright_kelly_dechon Since David Wright cracked a pair of home runs tonight, I figured I would once again break out this picture. (As I have been told, it is appreciated by men and women alike). If David gets back in stride, it is a huge boost to the Mets offense as I feel he has the ability to carry this team.

Another positive sign for the Mets was the continued effectiveness of the bullpen. After last night's stellar performance by the  pen,  tonight the much maligned  Scott  Schoenweiss  came  on to pitch  a  perfect  one  and  two  thirds innings.

Lets not forget either that Mets starter Claudio Vargas got it done. He pitched to the minimum twelve hitters through four innings before needing a bit of help from the pen,but he kept the Mets in the game.

Lets hope the Mets continue this recent trend!

Mets open 4 game stand vs Dodgers

The New York Mets open up a four game series tonight at Shea Stadium against the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch is set for 7:10pm. Claudio Vargas (1-2) starts for the Mets and Brad Penny (5-5) goes for the Dodgers.

The Mets hope to gain some momentum from last night's thrilling 7-6 victory over the Marlins. The Mets took 2 of 3 against the first place Marlins, after losing six of the previous seven games. With all the controversy surrounding the club of late, this would certainly be an opportune time for the Mets to get on a roll.

In a scheduling glitch, or worse, the Mets host the Dodgers on ESPN's Sunday night baseball, then fly across country to play in San Francisco on Monday night. Think about it...the game will end around 11:30 EST, the Mets then have to deal with their post game responsibilities, probably catch a 2:00am flight, fly five hours to Frisco, then play a game! That stinks!

New York Mets quick hits:

  • starting pitchers for 5/30; John Maine vs Clayton Kershaw
  • starting pitchers for 5/31; Mike Pelfrey vs Chad Billingsley
  • starting pitchers for 6/1; Johan Santana vs Hiroki Kurada
  • the Mets may look to aquire first baseman Scott Hattenberg if he clears waivers from the Reds
  • the Dodgers enter the series at 26-26, 3.5 back
  • the Mets are 25-26, 4.5 back
  • this date in Mets history;  5/29/86, Sid Fernandez beat  Fernando  Valenzuela  5-2

Mets now trail Marlins 5-4

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our NY GIants coverage!

Mets starter Oliver Perez just surrendered a three run homer to Corey Ross. The Mets now trail the Marlins 5-4.

Perez had been relatively effective yielding just four hits through six innings, problem is, three of the four hits went over the fence.

We will see what the Mets have left as there is still plenty of time to jump back in front.

Will the Mets support Willie today??

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals, as well as our NY Giants coverage!

It will be interesting to see if the New York Mets come out with any fire today against the Colorado Rockies. As we all are aware, the Mets manager is hanging by a thread. He needs some Mets wins and quick to keep his job. That said, will the players quit on him or use Willie as a rallying point?

If the Mets come out and play with some sense of urgency, if they play sharp, crisp baseball and get the win, maybe there is some glimmer of hope for this bunch. If the Mets come out flat and uninspired, they might be doing Willie a favor.

We will see soon how our New York Mets respond.

Start packing Willie

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals,as well as our NY Giants coverage!

The New York Mets extended their losing streak to five last night as they lost in thirteen innings to the Colorado Rockies, 6-5.

Billy Wager, the same Billy Wagner who routinely bashes teammates in the media, blew his second save of the season. Aaron Heilman gave up the winning run. But these are footnotes. The real story is the fact that this may very well be the final days as Mets manager for Willie Randolph.

GM Omar Minaya decided to make the trip; "Our team is not playing well," Minaya said, explaining his visit after a four-game sweep by the Braves dropped the Mets under .500. "Sometimes as a general manager you have to see how the team is playing. This is one of those situations where you always leave open the possibility of visiting the team and seeing the team." Sure. Could it be that you were sent there by Mets ownership to fire Willie on the road?

20060817randolph The sad thing in all of this is how the Mets players didn't step it up for their manager against a weak team like the Rockies. There are certain times when a team has to say "tonight we WILL win no matter what." Obviously, the Mets seem not to have players that feel that way.

While I have been critical at times of Willie Randolph's managerial style and decisions, I also feel he has had to deal with the hand dealt to him by Omar Minaya. Who can say that Minaya has built Willie a Championship quality team? If, or when, Willie goes, does the attention then shift to Omar Minaya? It has to. This debacle is not all Willie Randolph's fault.

If Willie gets fired, who will replace him? It doesn't make sense to can him just for the sake of doing so. There has to be a plan in place to make this Mets team better. In my opinion, that doesn't just involve Willie, but also Minaya and several of the Mets players. This team is too old, too injury prone, too poorly schooled in the fundamentals of the game, and frankly, too lacking when it comes to heart and hustle. At least it appears that way to me.

Truth is, for the New York Mets, there is no quick fix. While firing Willie Randolph might make some people feel better, don't expect that move alone to change the Mets fortunes.

Mets travel to Coors Field

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our NY Giants coverage!

The New York Mets, fresh of a nightmare trip to Atlanta, now head out to Coors Field to try their luck against the Colorado Rockies. Things can hardly get worse for the Mets having lost all four games against the Braves. Perhaps when they land, they may want to try some of the local product to help forget Atlanta:
Coors
I am just trying to help the Mets out anyway I can.

On a serious note, this really is a very important weekend for the Mets as rumors of manager Willie Randolph's firing heated up drastically after an awful week for the skipper in which he made some unfortunate comments regarding race, then saw his team get swept by the Braves.

It will be interesting to see if his players have his back or not, because at the moment Willie's future lies in their shaky hands....not a good place to be Willie!

That being said, I have been wondering when GM Omar Minaya will start getting some heat. After all, Minaya is the one who put this sometimes dysfunctional bunch together, yet he somehow seems to escape scrutiny. While Willie Randolph certainly bears much of the blame, especially for the Mets lack of focus and piss poor fundamentals. Still, Willie can only coach what he has. As they say you can't make chicken soup out of chicken s**t.

New York Mets quick hits for 5/23, 5/24 and 5/25:

  • The Mets enter the weekend with a record of 22-23, 4.5 back
  • the Rockies are 18-29, 10 back
  • The Mets placed Moises Alou on the 15 day DL
  • 5/23 starting pitchers are Oliver Perez vs Greg Reynolds
  • 5/24 starting pitchers, Claudio Vargas vs Jeff Francis
  • 5/25/starting pitchers, Joh Maine vs Jorge De La Rosa

Mets lose 4-2, swept by Braves

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our NY Giants coverage!

The New York Mets just completed a four game sweep of the Atlanta Braves...only problem is the Braves won all four.

Same story as we have seen too often this season; Johan Santana pitched pretty good but not good enough, the Mets hit the ball hard often, but usually right at somebody.

I could go on and bore you with the details, but why bother? The Mets are now 22-23, below .500 and reeling. Manager Willie Randolph is about to see some real negativity thrown his way, based on nothing more then the Mets poor showing, but probably added to by his comments this week.

I would love to believe that it is still early and  the  Mets could get it turned around, but why would anyone believe that? Based  on what we have seen, it is hard to  keep the faith.  Especially  for  me as I have felt  all  season  that the  New  York  Mets were  basically a  .500  team.  Looks like I may have given  them  too much credit.

As I have said often, I am still a Mets fan, regardless of results. As down as I might be on the Mets right now, as a fan, I still choose to hold out hope that they can get it on track.

For better or worse, I will keep watching the Mets and hoping.

Mets now trail 4-2 after seven

The New York Mets now TRAIL the Atlanta Braves, 4-2 in the eight.

I think I have seen this movie before....

Mets lead Braves in 4th!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our NY Giants coverage!

The New York Mets lead the Atlanta Braves, 2-1 through three innings.

Mets starter Johan Santana has kept them in position to win, so far, as he always does. The offense came from solo homers from Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran.

Please hang on guys.....a win would be nice.

Johan Santana needs to be the stopper tonight!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our NY Giants coverage!

The New York Mets close out a dreadful four game set tonight against the Atlanta  Braves.  The Braves have beaten  up on the  Mets pretty good  through the first three games.

Tonight's starting pitchers will be Johan Santana (5-2) vs Tim Hudson (6-3). The Mets need to salvage something positive out of this series and ace Johan Santana needs  to  step up  and  be  a  stopper  and  get  the  Mets back  on the  right  track. This is where  your  ace  pitcher  earns  his  money.

Mets crushed, 11-4!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals as well as our Giants coverage!

The New York Mets were beaten  last night, again, losing to the Atlanta Braves, 11-4. This makes it three straight defeats since sweeping the Yankees over the weekend.

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey struggled and didn't receive much help from his teammates. Jose Reyes reached base four times, aside from that, not much positive to take out of this game.

The Atlanta Braves continue to own the New York Mets and the Mets continue to display their mediocrity.Manager Willie Randolph caused a bit of a firestorm prior to the series by implying that the heat he has been taking is based on race. Sorry Willie, it is based on poor performance by the Mets. Since you are the manager, guess what, you take a hit for that.

I haven't jumped on the "Willie Randolph must go bandwagon" and I am not doing so now. But this thing needs to get turned around and quickly. The 2008 season so far seems to me like a continuation of the dismal end to the Mets 2007 season. That is not acceptable!

Willie, you disappoint me

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

Let me start by saying I have always liked Willie Randolph. I haven't always thought he did a great job as the manager of the New York Mets (it is a very difficult job that leads to a lot of second guessing). But I always respected him. I always thought Willie Randolph was a good baseball man. I always thought Willie Randolph was a class act. Now, I have to wonder.

For Mets fans living in a cave the past 48 hrs, here is what Willie Randolph had to say regarding the scrutiny he has received as Mets manager;

"Is it racial?" Randolph asked. "Huh? It smells a little bit."

Asked directly if he believes black managers are held to different standards than their white counterparts, Randolph said: "I don't know how to put my finger on it, but I think there's something there. Herman Edwards did pretty well here and he won a couple of playoff [games], and they were pretty hard on Herm. Isiah Thomas didn't do a great job, but they beat up Isiah pretty good. ... I don't know if people are used to a certain figurehead. There's something weird about it."

Okay Willie, lets look at some facts. First off, with regards to Herman Edwards, who did Okay as a head football coach, and did receive some critisism....(never really won anything though). You seem to imply the critisism was based on race. Fine. Have you heard of Giants coach Tom Coughlin? You may recall, Coughlin was almost run out of town by the media and the  fans, (prior  to  winning the  Super  Bowl  last  season), despite having a better track record then Herm Edwards . Coughlin  led  the  Jacksonville  Jaguars, an  expansion team, to  the  AFC  title  game  in  the  second  year  of  their  existence.  Tom Coughlin led  the Giants  to  a  division  title  and  playoff  appearence   in 2005. He led them to a second straight playoff  season  in  2006, he had a winning record. The New York media and fans were brutal to Coughlin. They couldn't wait for him to be fired!

Next point, Isiah Thomas. Are you kidding? Isiah is possibly the worst GM and coach I have ever witnessed. He, along with bonehead Jim Dolan (yes Willie, Dolan is white and I think he is a disaster), combined to take a proud franchise like the New York Knicks and turn them into a laughing stock. Let me be clear Willie, Isiah wasn't "beat up pretty good" because of his skin color. He was attacked because he was a dismal failure.

You also, in your interview, bring up your old boss Joe Torre, and ask why did Joe never get questioned. Sorry Willie, I remember when Torre first got hired, the back page of the NY Post had a caption referring to him as "clueless Joe". Maybe they thought he was black by your logic Willie? Oh, by the way Willie, Joe did manage to win four titles as Yankees manager and STILL got run out of town. Why do you think that happened Willie?

There is no question that America has a long and sad history of racial inequities that continue to this day. That is wrong and must be fixed. Every time there is an episode, it should be exposed and corrected. But I think the careless remarks by Willie Randolph do nothing to serve any body regarding this issue. By Willie's logic all white managers/coaches in this town who are beaten up by the media and fans must deserve it. Any black coach must simply be getting picked on because of the color of his skin.

You disappoint  me  Willie.

Same old Mets!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets dropped both games of yesterdays doubleheader to the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Tom Glavine topped the Mets 6-1 in game one, game two was an improvement as they managed to double their offense, losing only 6-2.

Over the last eighty games the Mets are now 40-40, a .500 team. After winning two from the Yankees I thought MAYBE they just might be  ready  to rise  above  mediocrity and get on a run. This season has been win one, lose one. The Mets showed their consistency, after winning two, of course they came out and dropped two.

As I have stated, they are what they are; a middle of the pack, .500 club as currently constituted.Get used to it folks.

After Yankees sweep, Mets head to Atlanta

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets, fresh  off  a  two  game  sweep  of  the  New  York  Yankees,  head  to  Atlanta to take on the Braves in a four game set.

After the frustrating series loss against the Washington Nationals, last Friday the Mets had a series of meetings; first Willie Randolph with the team, then a team only meeting. Based on this weekends results at Yankee Stadium, maybe it had some effect, or maybe the Yankees really just suck. Hopefully, it was the former and we can expect a bit more focus and intensity out of the manager and the players. Time will tell.

Anyhow, the upcoming series against the Atlanta Braves will provide a solid measuring stick. I won't get greedy and ask for a sweep, but just for the hell of it, how about three out of four??

New York Mets quick hits for 5/20, 5/21 and 5/22:

  • the starting pitchers for game one on 5/20 at 1:10pm are, John Maine vs Tom Glavine
  • game two starting pitchers, set for 7:10pm are Claudio Vargas vs Jorge Campillo
  • starting pitchers for 5/21 are Mike Pelfrey vs Jair Jurrjens
  • starting pitchers for 5/22 are Johan Santana vs Tim Hudson

Mets crush Yanks, 11-2!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets destroyed  the  New  York Yankees, 11-2  last  night  at  Yankee  Stadium. Mets  starter  Oliver  Perez was  very sharp  going  seven  and  two  thirds  allowing  just a  pair  of  runs.

The offense came from lots of places including a three run  blast by Jose Reyes who is getting on a bit of a kick with the long ball lately, (though I would rather he just got on base and stole a lot). Not complaining though...

The New York Mets managed to sweep the rain shortened two game set despite having been screwed out of a three run homer by home plate  umpire Bob  Davidson who overruled  one of  his  associates  who originally, and  correctly, got it right.

I can only wonder what Georgie's little boy will say to the local media after being swept by the Mets!!

Mets get screwed in the fourth!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The good news  is  the  New  York  Mets are  beating  the  Yankees  3-0  in  the top of the fourth. The bad news is Carlos Delgado got completely hosed out of a three run homer! In one of the WORST calls I have ever seen, crew chief Bob Davidson....who needs glasses badly, called a ball that CLEARLY bounced off the foul pole, a foul ball. Don't take it literally Bob, if it hits that pole, it is a homerun!

Here is a picture of BOB!

Mets top Yankees, 7-4!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets defeated the  New York Yankees, 7-4 yesterday at Yankee Stadium.

Johan_santana    Mets ace Johan Santana got the win, his fifth of the season. Santana wasn't dominant as he surrendered three solo homers to the Yanks, but as usual, he had enough to get it done. Johan seems able, in almost every outing, to give the Mets a chance to win.

Billy Wagner, who caused another stir on Thursday by calling out his teammates, came on for a four out save. Wagner entered in the eight inning and was effective. Something he is apparently willing to do more of; "I've told Willie Randolph, I am willing to do this when needed"

The Mets also flashed some defense as Carlos Beltran threw out Derek Jeter trying to stretch a single into a double, and Ryan Church's relay hit Luis Castillo who pegged Johnny Damon at the plate.

With seven rune scored, the offense obviously showed up as well. Jose Reyes cracked a home run and Carlos Beltran had an  RBI single.

The Mets showed a little spirit and fire yesterday, things sorely lacking much of the season. With any luck, it will continue tonight as Oliver Perez takes the mound against Chen-Meing Wang.

Subway Series resumes tonight

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets, fresh off  a  horrendous  series  against the  Nationals,  take on  cross town  rivals the  New York  Yankees.

I would generally be far more excited for this subway series, but I am still a bit depressed over the Nationals disaster, as are most Mets fans....we will be fine by game time.

Tonights starting pitchers for the 7:05 contest at Yankee Stadium will be Johan Santana (4-2, 3.10ERA) vs Darrell Rasner (2-0, 3.00ERA).

New York Mets quick hits for 5/16, 5/17 and 5/18:

  • the Mets and Yankees have met 168 times
  • the Yankees hold a 98-69 lead with one tie
  • the teams have met 60 times in the regular season, Yanks lead 35-25
  • starting pitchers on 5/17 are Oliver Perez vs Andy Petit
  • starting pitchers on 5/18 are John Maine vs Chen Mieng Wang
  • Sundays game will be aired on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball

Mets waste gem by Pelfrey

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets wasted an absolutely brilliant performance last night by Mike Pelfrey. The young righty pitched six innings of no hit ball and allowed only one run into the eight inning. He was awesome! sadly,on the 2008  New  York  Mets, often times that still is not enough. I feel bad for Pelfrey.

The Mets dropped  three  out  of   four  at  home  to  the  lowly  Washington  Nationals.  Inexcusable! They could not muster even a single run last night to support Pelfrey. Yes, I understand, Nationals starter Jason Bergmann was brilliant himself, credit  to  him.  But  still,  a  Championship caliber team, as the  Mets consider  themselves, find a way  to  win.

The 2008 New York Mets find a way to lose. Case in point;  bottom  of the  eight, Mets trailing  1-0, Jose  Reyes on first, nobody out. Luis  Castillo  sacrifices, Reyes  gets thrown out attempting   to advance all the way to third base. Now we have two outs and none on. Don't get me wrong, I admire Reyes's hustle and aggressive attitude, I really do. But sometimes you have to use your brain. That was a dumb play!

It was indicative of the way things have gone for the Mets all season, they find ways to lose. That is what .500  teams do.

Mets lose to Nationals, 5-3

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals, 5-3 tonight at Shea Stadium. It really wasn't the Mets fault....they won  yesterday, they were just due to lose today.

If the Mets have any chance at doing something meaningful this season, like say, winning the NL East, they  simply MUST break out of this win one, lose one trend they are riding. Further, to win the division, you MUST beat up on the weak teams...like the Nationals. I can deal with splitting against the Phillies, or some of the other better teams in the League.  Quality teams, in any sport, feast  on the weaker teams....you have to.

The New York Mets debut of Claudio Vargas was spoiled. Vargas did a great job for his first ever MLB start, two runs through six and a  third.  Then along came Aaron Heilman.....four runs later, Vargas's performance was waisted. Is it just me or is it time to realize that Heilman is a liability?? Don't get me wrong, I know the man has done some nice things for the Mets in the past. But this year I am almost resigned to switching the channel over to American Idol when he comes in.....maybe not, I actually hate that show, but you get the idea.

Mets proving my point

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

Let me be clear; I am still a Mets fan, it is a long season and I will watch every pitch I possibly can. I will cheer (not boo), my team at every turn. However,  as I  have been  saying, I feel  the 2008  New  York  Mets  are  just  a  little  better  then a  .500  team!  Nothing  wrong  with  that, it  is   what  it  is.

Every  time  you  begin to feel they are getting it going, you get a night like tonight's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.

The Mets are a  talented team, and I do not think Willie Randolph, who I have disagreed with many times before, is the  problem. I just  feel  you  are  getting  a  fair  representation  of  the  Mets  ability.  They are  a  pretty  good  team,  better  then  most.  Lots  of  MLB  fans  would  love  to  be  in  our  shoes. But, they are not an elite team.

I do  feel that  if  we  stay healthy, catch some breaks, get a few big  seasons out of key players...(Beltran, Reyes, Wright, Santana, Wagner, etc), maybe catch  a break from an unexpected player, we could make some noise.

That is what I am counting on....lets hope It  comes together.

Figueroa getting roughed up in the fifth

Nelson Figueroa is really starting to struggle. The New York Mets gave him the lead three
times, and all three went away. He surrendered three runs in the top of the fifth, the Mets trail 6-3.

Mets to open four game set vs Nationals

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets open up a four game set (weather permitting) tonight at Shea Stadium vs the Washington Nationals. The starting pitchers are scheduled to be Odealis Perez for the Nationals vs Nelson Figueroa for the Mets.

The Nationals enter the ball game with a record of 15-23, 8.5 games back while the New York Mets come in at 19-16, 3 back of the surprising Florida Marlins, and in a statistical tie with the Philadelphia cheese steaks...I mean Phillies.

The Mets look to gain some momentum after taking two of three against the Reds this weekend...by the way Dusty Baker, check your batting order closely next time.

New York Mets quick hits for 5/12, 5/13, 5/14 and 5/15:

  • there are 64 games left at Shea Stadium
  • on 5/12/72, Willie Mays made his New York Mets debut
  • the Mets rank 5th in the NL with a team ERA of 3.84
  • 5/13 starting pitchers: John Maine vs John Lannon
  • 5/14 starting pitchers: Mets, TBA vs Tim Redding
  • 5/15 starting pitchers: Johan Santana vs TBA

Mets top Reds, take two of three!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-3 this afternoon at Shea Stadium.Jose Feliciano came on in the ninth to finish.

It was a solid outing for Oliver perez, who pitched six solid innings.

In the top of the ninth inning, a very strange thing occurred; the Reds batted out of order. David  Ross led  off...out  of  order, he  flied out to  center. Willie Randolph  came  out  to   inform  the Umpire. Mistake, Willie. If  he  had  kept  quiet  unless something  happened, it  would  have  been  a  better  result.  What  occurred was, Randolph  complained, Ross batted for  second time and of  course  got a hit.  Had Willie waited, if the next batter got a hit, then he complained, they would both be out. It caused a twelve minute delay. But it ended well.

Mets drop second game of doubleheader

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets dropped the night cap of yesterday's doubleheader, 7-1  to the  Cincinnati Reds. Starter  Mike  Pelfrey  gave the  Mets  a  chance  going  six  innings and  allowing two runs.  However, the  Mets offense  must  have  shot  their  load  in  game  one  since  they  made  Reds  starter  Bronson  Arroyo  look  like  Sandy  Koufax in  game two. The  Mets  managed  just  one  run  on  four  hits  against  Arroyo.

As I have stated all year long, and many of you disagree, I just think this is who the 2008 Mets are, a little better then a .500 club. They are a very talented team with some major flaws; aging players (Carlos Delgado, Moises Alou, Pedro Martinez, etc), no set up man in the bullpen, a lack of clutch hitters and some questionable gloves in the field. It seems every time they are poised to make a run, they come up with a stinker, as was the case yesterday.

Yes, I still love my team, and yes I will be with them regardless of what happens. But I truly believe we should get used to seeing more of the same all season long...I would LOVE to be proven wrong.

Mets spank Reds, 12-6!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 12-6 on the front end of a day/night doubleheader.

Mets ace pitcher, Johan Santana got his fourth win of the season. He struggled allowing three runs, ten hits and well over 100 pitches thrown, but as always, Santana put the New York Mets in position to get a win. Nice job Johan!

There was plenty of offense as the Mets put up twelve for the second straight game. Carlos Beltran was the big gun with five RBI, including a three run triple. Lets hope this is Beltran coming back to form.

Game two is set for 7:30pm. Mike Pelfrey gets the start.

There has been no changes to the pitching match ups.

Mets to host Reds tonight...maybe

Weather permitting, the New York Mets open up a three game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Shea Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:10pm, however, I would keep a close eye on the weather before heading to the park.

The starters will be Mike Pelfrey for the Mets vs Matt Belisle for the Reds.

The Mets are coming off a .500 road trip out West.

  • the Reds are 14-21 and 7.5 back
  • 5/10 starters will be Johan Santana vs Bronson Arroyo

Mets win big in LA!

The New York Mets crushed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-1 today. Mets starter  John Maine was awesome; eight and a third innings, three hits, one run allowed and a two run single. Maine improved to 4-2 on the season. Great job John!

The offense was led by David Wright, Raul Casanova and Luis Castillo who each drove in a pair of runs.

As always, lets hope this is the start of a nice run for the Mets.

Are the Mets destined to be a .500 team??

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets lost last night to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4.

The loss showed many of the teams flaws; lack of ability to hold a lead (the Mets were up 4-1), lack of clutch hitting....the Mets were 2-14 with runners in scoring position, lack of focus...Ryan Church losing site of a ball that bounced off his glove and just sitting there while runners advanced (although in fairness to Church, he did make a great effort and hit the wall pretty good...but what the heck, I am trying to make a point here).

I am sad to say it, but I believe that absent some major changes to the team, we are just about a .500 club. As I have said often, it isn't just about this season, look back over the final thirty games of 2007, combine it with 2008, and you get a mediocre ball club.

Mets lose to Dodgers,Perez ineffectivehttp://edit.mlblogs.com/app?__mode=view&_type=entry&blog_id=1584

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Mets 5-1 last night in LA.

Mets starter Oliver Perez couldn't get the job done once again. While the Mets hitters certainly didn't help, you can't allow three homeruns in a single game. Although Mets manager Willie Randolph seemed not to have a problem with his performance. "Obviously, it's a better game if you compare the two," Willie Randolph said, referring to last week's blowout at the hands of the Pirates at Shea. "He didn't pitch that bad, really. He kept us in the game."

Way to raise the bar for your players Willie!

What about Delgado??

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

In my opinion, Omar Minaya, Willie Randolph and the New York Mets have to make a decision regarding first baseman Carlos Delgado.

Delgado was a great player who, whether due to injury or age,or both, is now a detriment to his team. He is a liability on the field, he runs slower then a pregnant woman in mud carrying groceries (sorry folks, it was all I could think of on short notice), and he is simply not hitting; .213 average, 4 homers, 16 RBI, 21 strikeouts. Sure he has his occasional days where  he makes us want  to  believe he is coming back. But it never lasts. You might say to me, "it has only been 29 games, give the man a chance", to which I reply, look at what he did last year.  A little research tells you this isn't simply a matter of a slump. It is an over paid, aging player who is hurting his team.

So what is the answer?  The way  I  see  it,  the  Mets have  three  options:

1) stay the course and hope he kicks  it  in  gear

2)keep Delgado at first until he , hopefully, gets hot, then trade him for whatever you could get (not  much I know, and we would have to eat much of his salary, but perhaps some AL team in need of a DH might bite....doubtful, but possible)

3)put Moises Alou at first...call me crazy  but there  are  benefits, Alou, whose  bat  we badly  need in  the line up might actually finish the season playing at first as opposed to the outfield, where he  always seems  to get hurt. Then bring up a kid to replace Alou out there, perhaps Fernando Martinez??

Anyhow, just a thought. What do you think??

Mets to battle Dodgers tonight!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets travel West to take on former Yankee skipper Joe Torre and his Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 10:10pm, est. Torre's club comes into  the  ballgame with a  record  of 17-14, while the Mets are 16-13. Two clubs with high hopes for the season looking to get into a groove should make for an exciting series.

T1_oliverperez Tonight's starting pitchers will be for the Mets Oliver Perez (2-2, 4.03 ERA) vs the  Dodgers  Chad Billingsley  (1-4, 5.21 ERA).

If the Mets hope to rise above their just slightly over .500 form, they need Perez to step it up a notch. The  left hander  has  been  mediocre  at  best  this  season  and  is  coming  off a  nightmare outing last week against the lowly Pittsburg Pirates. With Pedro Martinez getting close to returning, somebody..either Perez or Mike Pelfrey, is going to lose a starting job. Perez  should  have plenty of motivation to get it done against the Dodgers.

New York Mets quick hits for 5/5/08, 5/6/08 and 5/7/08:

  • Orlando Hernandez will travel to New York this week to have his injured foot reevaluated
  • Jorge Sosa leads all relievers with 4 victories on the season
  • Ryan Church is tied for the Major League lead among outfielders with 4 assists
  • Jose Reyes leads the majors with 5 triples
  • 5/6 starting pitchers; Nelson Figueroa vs Hiroki Kurida
  • 5/7 starting pitchers; John Maine vs Brad Penny

Mets take series, beat Diamondbacks 5-2!

Remember to check out our homepage at  my team rivals

The New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 today to take two of three in the series.

Starter Johan Santana was not great, but he certainly got the job done, six innings, one run, eight strikeouts. He deserved better but got a no decision. He struggled a bit with his control walking four and going deep in the count several times.

The Mets caught a break in the decisive ninth when Serrano....I mean Carlos Delgado(sorry, but watch the movie Major League and tell me he isn't Serrano's twin), hit into what should have been a double play ball to Conor Jackson who sent it flying into the outfield...(the check is in the mail Conor). The Mets added two insurance runs after Jackson's early Christmas Present.

Mets up 2-1 through six!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets lead the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 through six innings.

Mets starter Johan Santana has been effective if not brilliant. He showed veteran skill  in  escaping  a  bases  loaded jam in  the sixth. However, his pitch  count  is  high...116, so this might be all  for  him.

David  Wright slammed  a monster home run today.

Check back later for full details.

Mets blown out, 10-4

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets were crushed 10-4 by the Arizona Diamondbacks today.

Mike Pelfrey and the pen struggled....obviously. The lone bright spot was a three run homer by Carlos Delgado.

Once again, while it is still early, and they have a winning record, (barely), I am worried about the "win one, lose one" trend they are on. As I have mentioned repeatedly, it wouldn't be an issue had the season not ended the way it did last year.....just my opinion.

Mets crush D-backs, Alou returns!

Remember to check out our homepage my team rivals

The New York Mets ripped the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-2 last night. The game marked the return to the Mets line up of veteran Moises Alou. Alou had a base hit and ripped two hard line drives.

His presence seemed to inspire the Mets;

"He's another bopper," Church said. "Just to have him in there, it's a great feeling. You just look at the lineup, and you're like 'Wow, everyone can do some damage.' What he brings, it's a veteran presence and a lethal bat in the middle of the lineup."

Reyes Jose Reyes certainly seemed inspired with a three hit performance including a triple. Reyes, in my simple mind, has always been the key to the New York Mets success. If the return of Moises Alou helps Reyes, we are a much more formidable team. When Jose Reyes is on base, generally speaking, good things tend to happen.

My concern with this club though is still consistency; you get clobbered at home against a virtual triple A team like the Pittsburg Pirates, then come to Arizona and whip the Diamondbacks.I am thrilled with the victory, but again, lets see more of this type of play before we get too excited.

The teams hook up again today at 3:45. It will   be Mike  Pelfrey  for the  Mets  against  Brandon  Webb  for  the  Diamondbacks. Lets make it two in a row  guys.
