Have the Mets found their 5th starter?
The Mets lost to the Orioles today 4-3, but more importantly may have settled on their fifth starter in the process. Orlando
Hernandez was strong going five innings giving up two runs
on two hits. While the top four starters have given cause for
confidence, number five has given cause for concern. Prior to today
both Pelfrey and Hernandez have been….lets see….terrible. Both
looked sharp this afternoon. If you were skeptical you could
say it has more to do with the fact that Baltimore is
probably equivalent to a Double A team , but, time will tell.

Mets top Braves 9-4
Oliver Perez was sharp in a 9-4 victory over the rival Atlanta Braves Thursday afternoon. He went six and a
third innings yielding three runs and scattering seven hits. He is so far
looking like a steady fourth starter for the Mets.
Both Marlon Anderson and Ryan Church
had multiple hit days providing the offense.
The win improved the Mets Grapefruit Florida will be this afternoon at 1:05 against
League record to 19-10-1. Their final game in
the Orioles. It is a huge game for the two disappointments vying for the fifth
spot. Both Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey have come up short this Spring and
need a big day.
The Mets travel after the game to
Memphis
for
Saturday’s “Civil Rights” game before heading north to play em for
real.

Marlins top Mets
The Mets dropped one today against the Florida Marlins, 7-5. Although if you are looking for a positive sign, Tom Glavine gave up that same number of runs to the Marlins before I finished my first beer in a slightly more important contest last year. Today it took them a nine whole innings. (Sorry…..just had to get that off my chest).
Anyhow..David Wright had a two RBI single in the third, Gustavo Malina had a pair of hits and Carlos Delgado had a two run scoring, bases loaded single in the seventh.
On the pitching front, Rookie Robert Parnell was strong…three hits over five innings, five K’s, one walk.
Next up, the hated Atlanta Braves Thursday at 1:05. Oliver Perez gets the start.

El Pukee!!
Lousy! Terrible! Sorry Mets fans, not sure what else to say. Orlando Hernandez, the Mets 5th starter whose age ranges anywhere from thirty nine to being old enough for half price bus fare, flat out stunk . After throwing a simulated game last week that was considered to be pretty dismal, he gave up five runs in three innings today against St. Louis. His fastball topped out at 85 mph, not necessarily a big deal if he had control of his pitches; he didn’t.
The Mets starting rotation seems to be pretty solid from one through four, but the fifth spot is a HUGE question mark. It appears to be a competition between Hernandez (whatever his age may be), and Mike Pelfrey. He also pitched today. I truly wish I could claim he put our minds at ease. No such luck. He was actually worse then Hernandez. Four innings, eight runs, too many hits to count.
I don’t wish to make too much out of a bad day, but still it is troubling. As mentioned, I am pretty satisfied with our top four starters. However, number five is a major concern to me. Lets hope one of the guys steps up.

Mets lose in rain shortened game.
The Mets dropped a rain shortened contest against the Cleveland Indians today. Oliver Perez struggled in the 5-2 loss giving up seven hits and allowing four runs in the fourth inning.
In a positive sign, Carlos Beltran blasted a solo home run.
The loss drops the Mets spring record to 16-8-1. Up next, tomorrow against the St. Louis Cardinals at 1:10pm.

Pedro, Mets hammer Nats, 8-2
The Mets outstanding spring continued as the Amazins beat up the Nationals 8-2 to improve to 16-7-1. Pedro was sharp again going five innings with four strikeouts and surrendering just two runs on five hits. He also threw 71 pitches with no problem (a very good sign).
The bullpen also came through, the combination of Rincon, Feliciano, Schoenweis and Wise (I know, sounds like a law firm), teamed up for four scoreless innings.
The offense came from David Wright, 3 hits including a Home Run, Carlos Beltran, 2 hits and Jose Reyes, 2 RBI.

Johan looks like an ace!
Johan Santana showed us what the Mets saw in him. Six shutout innings, seven strikeouts and only one walk. He simply was too much for the over matched Orioles hitters. Johan’s impressive performance led the 15-7-1 Mets to a 7-0 victory.
As opening day approaches the Mets pitching is causing reason for optimism.
The spring schedule continues today as Pedro Martinez takes on the Nationals at 1:10 pm.

Strong outing needed from Santana!
I know, I know, it’s only spring training so who really cares. But with so much of Mets fans hopes riding on the left arm of Johan Santana, and the start of the regular season drawing near it would be nice to get an "ace" like performance out of our new ace. I realize during his previous outings he was probably just sort of keeping his arm loose and getting ready. But now it’s time to let it fly. I would love nothing more then to watch Johan mow down the Orioles tonight and have Mets fans salivating for opening day.
My Maine man!
The Mets strong pitching continues as John Maine came up big in a 3-1 victory against Cleveland. Five innings, seven strikeouts and only one earned run. Not bad for a number four starter! The bullpen got it done as well with Billy Wagner getting the save.
Next up, the Orioles tomorrow night with Johan Santana taking the mound. It would be nice to see the new ace show us what he has. He has not had a great spring so far but I am still thrilled to have him pitching for us.
